The 76th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is now well underway, with the Rally officially starting Monday morning but festivities starting as early as last Thursday. A few notes on opening weekend:
- Officially attendance numbers won’t be released until next week but as expected Rally attendance has been down compared to last year. This is no surprise because 2015 was the 75th Anniversary of the Rally and attendance spiked to 510,000 versus 390,000 in 2014.
- There were no fatal motorcycle accidents during the opening weekend. However, the rally’s first fatality was recorded Monday when an unidentified 63 year old rider failed to negotiate a turn 3 miles south of town. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety announced that up to Monday afternoon no fatal accidents had been reported. This is compared to six fatalities last year during opening weekend.
- Citation numbers, however, are higher then last year. Over opening weekend 438 citations and almost 1500 “warning” tickets were issued. About 100 more then last year for each.
- Entertainment has been in no short supply once again. Every venue, campsite, gift shop and restaurant is rolling out a hook. Whether its a dance team, a band, even a “pop-up” wedding chapel there appears to be something for everyone!
